Red Envelopes

In Vietnamese and Chinese tradition, the standard gift at weddings is money in a red envelope called a lì xì or hóngbāo, respectively. The red color is a symbol for good luck, and the character 囍 represents the "double happiness" of the newlywed couple. The denomination of the gift should avoid the number four (e.g. $14, four bills) since "four" is a homophone for "death"; denominations with the number eight (e.g. $18, eight bills) are lucky since "eight" is a homophone for "prosperity." Guests present the red envelopes at the banquet, either to the couple when entering the banquet hall or to the best man when the couple makes a toast at each table.

If you would like to participate in this tradition, we will have red envelopes that you can use. You can also find red envelopes at any Chinese or Vietnamese gift shop or online.

Honeymoon

If you'd prefer to give a gift online, you can contribute to our honeymoon fund. We are excited to take a two-week trip to Europe this July:

  • The first destination is a three-night stopover in Iceland. We're staying in the tiny town of Hella, from which we'll visit the famous Skogafoss and Gullfoss waterfalls, marvel at the eponymous Geysir, take a hike on the Solheimajokull Glacier, and stroll along the Black Sand Beach.
  • After Iceland we fly to Paris, the City of Lights. We're staying in the 1st arrondissement a short way from the Louvre and Notre Dame Cathedral. We'll visit classic sights like the Eiffel Tower, Arc de Triomphe, and Musée Rodin.
  • Next we take the TGV eastwards to the Rhine Valley to stay in the well-preserved city of Colmar, famous for half-timbered homes and the canals of la Petite Venise. From here, we will take day trips by bike along the famous Wine Route of Alsace to the towns of Ribeauvillé, Riquewihr, and Eguisheim.
  • Finally we travel south to Grindelwald in the Bernese Alps of Switzerland. We will go hiking in alpine meadows, take the underground train to the famous Jungfraujoch observatory at the top of a glacier, and go for a tandem paragliding flight in a glacial valley. After a final night in Zurich, we fly back home, memories in tow.
